This page is dedicated to my friend and faithful companion Chakotay or in his pedigree name Alaskinua Wolf Spirit. As the first anniversary of his birth nears I thought it fitting to create a web page in his honour. I hope that in reading this page anyone who may be considering adopting one of these magnificent creatures will gain some benefit from my experience and that everyone else will come to understand and appreciate the true beauty, magnificent temperament and total loyalty that such a majestic animal can give you.

Just a little over a year ago, our old faithful companion poodle cross "Hobo" died, and after we started to get over the grief at our loss we decided that we really should adopt a new family member.

A small dog with a heart bigger than a lion and a smile and loyalty that can never be replaced... you are sadly missed by all those that remain behind......

Having been in the past people who always tried to give a home to an unwanted dog, we decided to instead treat ourselves to a pedigree one. Not to suggest that there is in any way something lacking in a mongrel , just that we felt it would be near impossible to get another dog that even resembled our Bo (poodle cross) mainly because he was a cross breed. Then came the really difficult part, the choosing of a particular breed of dog over others, I had in the past had always leant towards a bull terrier, whereas my partner had always wanted a Maltese or shitzu. Clearly there had to be a compromise made. and so we sat down together and went through some dog books we had, picking out breeds we thought were nice. Amazingly there were only a handful of breeds we liked, and this made the task much simpler. We found that each of us had held a desire to own a Malamute, and so set out to find out more about the breed and whether they were even available here in Western Australia. We contacted the Canine Association for a list of breeders and we were fortunate enough to find the number of the Alaskinua kennels. There I met Tony and Joanne, who showed me their beautiful dogs Navaho and Mishka.

who we fell in love with instantly. Especially Navaho, such a massive specimen and yet so gentle and approachable. In those few moments we knew that an Alaskan Malamute was the dog for us, they also had variations of colour and fur length in their dogs, and so we could get a bet And so a few visits later after carefully watching the progress of the newborns we picked out our little boy, who as previously mentioned turns 1 year old next month.

I would say in hindsight that if you have never had a large dog before or if you live a lifestyle that sees you more away from home than in it, then a Malamute is definitely not the dog for you. the lovely little balls of fluff that you see as a puppy will very soon become your worst nightmare. They are by their very nature people dogs, they need to feel they are a part of your "pack" , and that you are their pack leader. They do possess a very dominant personality, and if you allow it they will surely dominate you and become a nuisance not only to you, but to anyone they come into contact with. If, however , you are familiar with large dogs and have the patience required and strength of will and temperament then you will find that your Malamute will be everything you could ever want in a dog and more.
